"All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well."

-Julian of Norwich

Hi Kathleen,

I came across this newsletter from a few years back and, today, it spoke volumes to me! I decided to adapt it and share it with you again!

I love the quote above from the 15th century mystic, Julian, who lost all her family in the plague... yet remained optimistic. She recognised the wisdom in accepting that our 'good' and our ‘bad’ experiences always pass.

Life is always changing, yet we can hold on to the belief that ‘all shall be well’. It’s a phrase that has grounded me in difficult times.

With all the many challenges in today’s world - and in our own lives - it’s so easy to have our energy and emotions feel depleted.  We get near to running on empty and It’s all too easy to think of negative emotions or experiences as being permanent. Thankfully, as Julian points out, they are passing.

The world has become far less safe, economies are in flux, and communication between family members and friends can be fraught when you disagree on issues. All that is happening has a direct and indirect impact on all of us.

📘 In this newsletter I am going to share a few of my reflections - and related practices - from my book Fill Your Well: 30 Days of Resilience Journal.

🌼 Springtime is wonderful and an ideal time to take stock and replenish internally. ⬇️ Check out my offer below to join me in building your mental fitness.

All the best!

And now, a few excerpts from my book (with a couple of added words!) that will hopefully help to re-fill your well 🙏❤️

DAY 1

"Be comforted dear soul! There is always light behind the clouds.” Louisa May Alcott

Hope is what we need in abundance in this very strange - and sometimes frightening - time in our history.

I don’t really know what the world was like when Louisa May Alcott wrote these words, but they are so apt for today. It can certainly feel as if the world, as we knew it, is falling apart. Thankfully, for most of us life continues though with less security. The fall out from politics, the war in Ukraine and Gaza -- and Climate Change -- are all demanding our attention and can make us feel powerless.

The message from this is to trust in the future. The world has gone through many changes and has survived - and so will we. The challenge is what kind of world and what part we can play to make it a good one but...that’s a conversation for another day!

⏭️ Exercise:

Draw up a Dream List - a list of what you dream about (doing) and what’s important to you. Review it and notice if it includes ‘shoulds’ or ‘desires’ - journal about this!

Day 7

“We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure; joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” Buddha

Niamh Mason’s picture has a calming effect on me. I’m drawn into the tranquility of the water and the beauty of the scene.

It makes me think how images can feed us - or disturb us!! Many people do not watch the news for that reason - all the ‘bad’ news can have a physical effect on us.

I’m not suggesting we block out reality, but we need to protect our minds and hearts. Watch or listen in small doses and, as an antidote, invite more beauty into your life - photographic images, films, books and tapping into nature will help build our resilience. We need to feed our minds and hearts to create the 'bridges to good outcomes’.

⏭️ Exercise:

Mull over what you are ‘feeding' yourself - images, media, news - and reflect on how it may be affecting you. Bring in the ratio of 3 positives to 1 negative to balance it!

Day 13

“To have courage for everything that comes in life -  everything lies in that.”  Teresa of Avila

Beautiful words and a beautiful image from my favourite photographer, Niamh Mason of Crooked House Photography!

I’m sure most of us find that, on some days, more courage is needed than others. For me, it’s not that things outwardly change on a given day - but some days it can all just feel more challenging.

Connecting to Resilience, I’m aware of the importance of good sleep (sometimes a challenge for me), getting exercise and eating well. For me, ‘2 out of 3 ain’t bad’ - to quote Meatloaf! But, even when we are doing lots of the right things, we can have days that ‘demand more courage’. Those days call us to be kind and patient with ourselves.

Self-care is another Resilience tool and one many of us neglect. We give freely to others but not always to ourselves. It’s not being selfish - we can’t give to others what we don’t give to ourselves. My coach calls us to give ourselves Massive Compassion, and it’s so needed.

⏭️ Exercise:

What is your Self-Care like? How do you show kindness to yourself?

Give yourself a mark out of 10 (0 is no self-care at all and 10 is I’m doing really well!). Consider how you might increase it now.

If you’d like to read more my book is available on Amazon - with a special sale until end of May! Please leave a review to help me get move coverage, thanks.
