"Leadership is practiced not so much in words
as in attitude and in actions."

Harold S. Geneen

At the start of a new year we all look ahead with the intention of accomplishing great things. While it’s great to be excited and open to all that can happen, it can also leave us a bit vulnerable to comparisons and thinking others will accomplish so much more. Our inner Judge is only too ready to point out the colleagues and friends who seem to do it all so much easier and with more grace.

An old phrase comes to mind when I reflect on how we beat ourselves up, “It’s a mugs game!"

That brought me to the Collins Dictionary to find it means just what I thought it did: If you say that an activity is a mug's game, you mean that it is not worth doing because it does not give the person who is doing it any benefit or satisfaction. As natural as it can feel, the familiar practice of comparing ourselves to others we put up on a pedestal is not helpful - and is a good habit to ditch this year!!

This newsletter will focus on the real leadership we aspire to and I’ll share wisdom that has come my way. Hope you enjoy it!

And on that note, I am co-hosting a workshop" Providing Clear Expectations and Effective Feedback" - check out the details below!

All the best,

Believe in You Now...

You Can Stop Comparing & Start Owning Your Authentic Leadership Style!

In this issue, we will revisit the second pillar of my 4 Pillar model, "Believe in You: Now You Can Stop Comparing & Start Owning Your Authentic Leadership Style"

Let's reflect on the detrimental effects of constantly comparing ourselves to others. This tendency often leaves us feeling inadequate and undermines our motivation and self-belief.

In my leadership coaching practice, I've observed how crucial it is for us to embrace our unique leadership styles, free from the shackles of comparison. Whether you lead in the workplace, community, or within your family, the following insights are relevant to all.

In the ever-evolving landscape of leadership, I've explored various assessments and frameworks over the years and the terrain has transformed significantly, thanks to the work of visionaries like Brené Brown.

Brené emphasizes that true leadership is not about comparing ourselves to others but about becoming Brave Leaders, capable of embracing vulnerability. In a recent Harvard Business Review article, she highlighted the importance of vulnerability in leadership, stating, "When we combine the courage to make clear what works for us and what doesn’t with the compassion to assume people are doing their best, our lives change."

Leading by Example: A New Paradigm of Leadership

As we navigate the present landscape of the "future of work," characterized by shifting dynamics between employers and employees, open and candid communication becomes paramount. Leaders who create spaces for vulnerability, build psychologically safe environments, fostering authenticity and creativity.

Brené outlines two key principles for leading by example:

  1. Be honest about your struggles: Embrace the courage to acknowledge your challenges, fostering a kind workplace that encourages open sharing. Confident Vulnerability, as described by Dan Cable, promotes learning through mistakes, openness about developmental journeys, and moral humility.

  2. Do the difficult thing, even when others are hesitant: Actions speak louder than words. Be open about controversial issues, challenge unacceptable behavior, and address societal concerns. By fostering an environment where teams feel safe expressing themselves, we encourage diverse perspectives and innovative solutions.
